Parma University students discover new polimorphous crystalline of human PCNA protein

Supervised by Prof. Pietro Roversi, thirteen students of the Master’s degree in Chemistry at the University of Parma have performed a series of measurements at the beamline XRD2 during an internship at Elettra Sincrotrone Trieste.
The group has brought along crystals of human PCNA (proliferating cell nuclear antigen), previously obtained from the laboratories of the Department for Chemical Sciences, Life and Environmental Sustainability at their University, subsequently collecting their diffraction data with the support of researchers Annie Heroux and Nicola Demitri, both in charge of Elettra’s XRD2 beamline. Starting from the calculated diffraction data, the students have been able to obtain the human PCNA structure in a new crystalline form which had never been described before and that will be entered in the Protein Data Base. A paper describing the new findings will be submitted for publication in an international scientific magazine.
