Abstract
Group III (Al, Ga, In) and group IV (Sn, Pb) metal atoms deposited on the Si(100)2x1 surface form one dimensional lines that can be considered as one-dimensional objects. We have investigated by scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and by first-principle calculations the structure and the stability of these rows of atoms. In this seminar, we shall present some of the results that we have obtained on the structure of the lines and on the dynamics of the deposit (in the case of lead). The growth of one-dimensional III-IV (In-Sn) alloys will also be discussed.
