Magnetism of low-dimensional systems

ABSTRACT
A fundamental question in solid state physics is how the magnetic
properties of matter depend on the dimensionality and the atomic geometry.
Surface nanostructures represent a model case because their relevant structural
parameters can be varied in a controlled way. Methods based on the use
of synchrotron radiation offers unique possibilities to examine the magnetic
behaviour of these low-dimensional systems. New results will be presented
on the magnetism of one-dimensional wires and on the layer-resolved magnetic
structure of two-dimensional films.
