ABSTRACT
The Accelerator & Fusion Research Division (AFRD) at LBNL traces
it roots back to Ernest O. Lawrence. In the intervening years since
the cyclotron the interests and pursuits have greatly increased varied
within AFRD. AFRD is active in supporting large accelerator projects
such as the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) or the Spallation Neutron Source
(SNS). It is even more active in development of accelerator physics
and technology. Included in the active areas of work are ion sources,
superconducting magnets, accelerator source physics, laser accelerators,
rf development, and development and enhancement of the Advanced Light Source
(ALS) through its ALS Accelerator Physics Group. A few of the recent
developments within AFRD will be highlighted. These will include
the status of the Superbends that are to be installed on ALS this year,
tune phase-space mapping of the ALS, and the 3rd harmonic cavity operation
at the ALS. Recent results in the laser-plasma accelerator work will
also be discussed. As time permits recent work on tunable permanent magnets
and recent developments within the superconducting magnet group will also
be presented.
