Third Generation VUV/Soft X-ray Light Source Projects in Japan

ABSTRACT
Two 3rd generation light source projects for the VUV and SX region
are presently under active consideration in Japan, and a decision is expected
soon. The Tokyo University project is a 1.6 GeV maximum energy machine
which features a minimum emittance lattice (less than 1 nm rad at 1 GeV)
with two 27 m long straight sections. The optics has been specially
optimised to expand the dynamic aperture. A 27 m undulator could provide
very narrow bandwidth radiation, eliminating the need for a monochromater
and so increasing the photon flux by a factor of 1000. The possibility
of installing three undulators in a saw-tooth arrangement in the 27 m straight
is also being considered. The Tohoku University project is a 1.8 GeV machine
with emittance of 4.9 nm rad and is designed to have many insertions: the
ring contains 14 straight sections of 5 m and two long straight sections
with length of 15 m. A free-electron laser is being considered for one
of the long straight sections. The status and main features of the projects
will be described.
