Design studies for Fermi FELs

Enrico Allaria and Francesca Curbis

Abstract
In the first part of the seminar the main results of FEL numerical simulations that have been done for the FERMI FEL project will be presented. Attention will be focused on those results that have been used for the definition of the FEL1 and FEL2 lines of FERMI. We will first present results based on simulation of ideal electron bunches whose parameters have been set as predicted by the FERMI Linac studies. We will then present more realistic simulations based on electron bunches that have been numerically propagated from the Gun through the Linac. With these start to end simulations we verified the effect of the properties of realistic electron bunches on FEL performance. Also the effect of possible shot-to-shot fluctuations of some electron bunch parameter due to jitter and noise on Linac and Gun elements has been investigated. Finally, considerations about the implications of some open issues on the final FEL performance will be presented. The second part of the seminar will be devoted to present Coherent Harmonic Generation using the existing FEL line on the Elettra storage ring. This device represents an ideal test facility for all kind of studies which are planned for FERMI, from diagnostics and synchronization to user experiments using the harmonic radiation. The status of the experiment will be presented together with the expected performance.
