Challenge – Top Up Operation

Peter Kuske
BESSY

Abstract
BESSY is planning to change over to Top Up operation in the near future. In the design of the early 3rd generation VUV light sources high injection efficiency under all possible operating conditions of the ring, with the beam shutters open and the user experiments progressing continuously has not yet been an issue. Thus implementing Top Up operation at these facilities is a challenge. In the talk, the status of the BESSY facility is presented and the injection and accumulation process into storage rings is reviewed. High, reliable injection efficiency with very little orbit distortions of the stored beam is the key to successful Top Up operation. Limitations of the BESSY facility will be pointed out together with the envisioned solutions and approaches already taken to overcome them. ELETTRA might face similar problems, since for example some of our limitations are directly related to the pulsed storage ring injection elements, which were designed and built by ELETTRA. Implementing Top Up operation at our two light sources could require quite similar modifications and improvements, hardware developments and replacements – so let’s cooperate.
