Gamma-ray Astronomy - the view on the High Energy Universe

Francesco Longo

Abstract
The results of the AGILE and the forthcoming GLAST mission will open a new phase on Gamma-Ray astrophysics. The Gamma-ray sky is populated by the most powerful sources in the Universe. Among them, the Gamma Ray Bursts are the most intriguing. They are cosmological sources emitting up to 10^45 W in gamma-rays. Current models for their explanation involve death of massive stars or the merger of compact objects and relativistic plasma acceleration by powerful relativistic jets. In this seminar their observational characteristics and the models of their nature will be presented.
