Abstract
The solid state physics SISSI branch exploits the brightness (flux) advantage of infrared synchrotron radiation in order to perform measurements under high pressures and to unveil the electrodynamics of solids at the very low (THz) frequencies. We overview the newest research performed at the SISSI beamline, with a particular emphasis on pressure induced insulator to metal transitions in correlated electron systems and on the study of the superconducting gaps of new materials. The phenomenon of Coherent Synchrotron Radiation makes accelerator based sources very unique THz sources in terms of power (both cw and pulsed), broadband coverage and time structure. The opportunities for THz studies both at the SISSI beamline and from Fermi will be highlighted.
