Machine protection and beam loss monitor options for linacs.

Abstract
Because linear accelerators can sustain accidental beam losses indefinitely, they have special requirements for their detection and for an active protection system. At linac-based light sources, such a system must also prevent the deposition of excessive dose in the permanent magnets of insertion devices. The talk will give a brief overview of the machine protection systems at FLASH and the European XFEL, and present several options for beam loss monitors at normal conducting machines.
