Rethinking carbon nanotube and graphene growth

M. H. Rümmeli
IFW Dresden, Germany

Abstract
The technological possibilities harnessed by graphene and carbon nanotube (CNT) devices and materials have resulted in a worldwide anticipation of unprecedented advances in the realm of molecular electronics and smart materials; however, the true potentials of carbon nanostructures are yet to be unleashed. One of the main reasons for this is the lack of control in their growth. Despite many studies centered on their synthesis, our understanding of the fundamental patterns involved in their nucleation and growth remain somewhat limited. In this presentation, the use of unconventional catalysts, namely oxides, is explored for carbon nanotubes synthesis, as well as their potential for graphene fabrication. The use of oxides presents a new opportunity to integrate carbon nanostructures with present day CMOS technologies.
