Multiphoton ionization and metrology at soft X-ray lasers
Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt (PTB), Berlin, Germany
Abstract
For more than 30 years, PTB has used synchrotron radiation for various applications of metrology. It concerns also the characterization of soft and hard X-ray free electron lasers (FELs) in close cooperation with Deutsches Elektronen-Synchrotron (DESY). Linear and nonlinear photoionization of atomic gases is used in order to measure FEL pulse energy, focus size, and pulse duration. The talk will give an overview of this work with emphasis on recent results relating to the impact of pulse duration on different nonlinear multiphoton mechanisms. In the outlook, a number of further experiments will be proposed for better understanding multiphoton processes in the soft X-ray regime which also implies the detection of X-ray fluorescence.
