Towards Integrated Artificial Photosynthetic Systems: Is a Supramolecular Approach Feasible?

Abstract
Artificial Photosynthesis can be defined as an an emerging technology based on principles learned from Nature where individual components perform the essential light-harvesting, charge-separation, and water splitting functions to store solar energy in the form of chemical bonds.
Several strategies have been attempted in the last decade to achieve high solar to fuel efficiency, and promising results have been obtained. Here, a review of the most notable literature examples will be presented, along with an innovative supramolecular approach based on the developments of seemingly unrelated research fields.
