An Overview of Accelerator Activities at Argonne

J. M. Byrd
Advanced Photon Source at Argonne National Laboratory, Argonne Accelerator Institute

Abstract
I will give an overview of the accelerator activities at Argonne National Laboratory. The focus will be on the Upgrade of the Advanced Photon Source, which will be the world’s brightest storage ring light source when it comes into operation in mid-2024. I will present the current status of the project but also describe a number of the ongoing accelerator R&D activities underway to prepare for the new machine ranging from ion instability studies to plans for a transition to solid-state RF sources. I will also provide a sample of several of the general accelerator R&D activities at Argonne with topics such as superconducting and permanent magnet undulators, structure wakefield accelerators, and XFEL oscillators.
